Singapore bus planning: trunk, feeder and City Direct describe different journey needs

A bus number is only part of a journey plan. Singapore’s Land Transport Authority describes service types with different roles. Knowing whether you need a neighbourhood connection or a longer cross-town journey makes the next route search more precise.

The categories in the LTA explanation

The LTA bus-network page describes trunk services as longer routes between neighbourhoods and other parts of town. Feeder services connect surrounding estates with MRT stations or interchanges. City Direct services link residential estates with the Central Business District during weekday peak hours.

These are service descriptions, not a timetable for a named journey. The page points readers to MyTransport.SG for route planning and service information.

Describe the gap in your journey

If rail takes you near a destination but leaves an estate-level connection, begin by researching that final segment. If the whole trip crosses several neighbourhoods, a trunk route may be a relevant search starting point. For a CBD commute, check whether the actual City Direct route serves your origin, direction and travel period.

The category narrows the question; it cannot choose a route without an origin and destination. Keep the exact stop or meeting point separate from a general district label.

Check both outward and return travel

A weekday peak connection should not automatically be treated as an all-day sightseeing service. Search the return journey independently, using its actual date and time. The same applies to an evening or weekend journey whose conditions differ from the outward trip.

Retain the route result with the direction and date you selected. This article has not tested an app itinerary, so it supplies no predicted arrival, transfer allowance or guarantee of a connection.

Finish with current service information

Once a route is identified, inspect the operator’s current timetable, stop information and disruption notices. A general network description remains useful for understanding the service, but cannot establish today’s traffic conditions or operating status.

Do not merge a shuttle, a premium service and a public trunk route into one fare or availability assumption merely because all use buses. Their specific conditions require their own records.

Editorial assessment: define the segment and service role before comparing route results. Source checked on 14 October 2026. This is a practical reading of LTA’s published categories, with no fare claim, app test or first-hand commute experience.
